The 1977 Super Joe line was Hasbro’s first venture into a smaller scale for its very popular GI Joe figures.  In many ways it is a line that was ahead of its time and unsure of what it wanted to be.  Back when the Super Joe line was in development, high petroleum prices were making 12 inch GI Joes economically unfeasible.  At the same time, Mego was having great success with their 8 inch Official Worlds’ Greatest Super- Heroes line.  So a decision to relaunch the GI Joe brand as a new 9 inch figure seemed like a good idea.   However, in 1978 Kenner would release its 3 ¾ Star Wars line which would revolutionize the action figure industry and effectively end the promising Super Joe line.

Hasbro dubbed its new line Super Joe to differentiate it from the GI Joe line and to no doubt, attract some of the popularity of the Mego super-heroes figures.  The line is set in an unspecified future date and is a mixture of science fiction fantasy and adventure.  Super Joe had an arch enemy to fight on day one, a thematic element that carried over into the 3 ¾ GI Joe line.  The line utilizes a number of existing Adventure Team accessories, but has some very innovative new additions as well.

Hasbro commissioned illustrator and graphic designer Mike Hinge to create artwork for some of the Super Joe packaging.  Mike Hinge was known for his futuristic and psychedelic artwork. Hinge's work gives Super Joe his very 1970's futuristic colorful look and no doubt adds to Super Joe's charm.  To learn about Mike Hinge and see more of his great art, check out The Mike Hinge Reference site by Ivan Richards.

The goal of this site is to be a reference for the entire Super Joe line produced between 1977 and 1978 and include the many appearances of the Super Joe figure and equipment in other toy lines.
